The problem
People’s foot health is declining
The foot isn't just for walking; it's also a sensory and muscular organ, as well as a pump for lymph and blood —crucial for healthy walking and good posture . However, human foot health has deteriorated significantly in recent decades . In our modern environment, we move almost exclusively on hard, flat surfaces in ready-made shoes . As a result, the foot can only fulfill its original functions to a limited extent—with far-reaching health consequences. These include posture problems, muscular imbalances, an increased susceptibility to injury, and chronic orthopedic problems .
Many barefoot shoes promise relief, but are often unsightly and have limited effectiveness on artificial surfaces . While conventional orthopedic insoles are well-suited for supporting feet that already have structural problems, they are unable to actively strengthen functionally impaired feet, which are a precursor to the disease, and thus prevent further progression of foot weakness and the resulting health problems .
Precisely for this purpose, we have developed an insole that optimally simulates natural barefoot running with its many benefits in virtually any shoe. We present: The SmartInsole® from Smartfoot®

Who are SmartInsoles® suitable for?

The SmartInsoles® are suitable for people of all ages who have not yet developed a structural foot disease (structural diseases such as clubfoot, diabetic foot, severe osteoarthritis, etc.) and were developed for 4 different needs:
1) For professionals who stand and walk a lot…
...SmartInsoles® offer targeted support and noticeable comfort. They help reduce fatigue in everyday work, activate the foot muscles, and maintain optimal foot health.
2) For parents who want to bring the benefits of barefoot running into their children's shoes,…
... SmartInsoles® support healthy development and help prevent misalignments and resulting postural damage, especially in combination with muscle-activating exercises (e.g. according to the concept of spiral dynamics by Dr. Christian Larsen).
3) For older people with unsteady gait…
...SmartInsoles® can specifically improve stability and foot awareness, thus demonstrably reducing the tendency to fall. Furthermore, by activating blood and lymph flow in the foot, leg swelling can be reduced.
4) For athletes and anyone who values their (foot) health…
...and want to maintain this in the long term, SmartInsoles® promote a natural gait, support regeneration, and contribute to better body awareness - for greater efficiency and injury prevention in training and everyday life.

How the SmartInsole® works
The SmartInsole® is unique because it doesn't simply passively support the foot, but actively stabilizes it through muscle stabilization . It has a flat design and 56 precisely placed stimulation points. Targeted stimulation of the sole of the foot enhances physical awareness and the exchange of information between the feet and the brain . This improved awareness is converted into movement programs in the brain, which then translate into improved muscle function . This ultimately contributes to improved posture and stability , as well as a reduced risk of falls and muscle cramps .
Furthermore, our foot skin has a special structure with multi-layered tension and grid lines. With every step on natural surfaces (e.g., beach, forest, meadow), this structure enables the mobilization of 30-40 cm³ of fluid , which improves lymph and blood flow . However, this only occurs to a limited extent if you spend most of your time standing or walking on the hard, flat surfaces of our modern environment . This is why many people in professional environments have swollen legs and feet at the end of the day. With the SmartInsole®, we can compensate for today's lack of natural walking and bring the diverse benefits of walking barefoot on natural surfaces into virtually any shoe!

If you don't take care of your feet
What happens if you continue to walk on hard, flat surfaces without considering your feet ?
If you neglect your feet, you could potentially...
...cannot find a solution for recurring knee, foot or back pain ,
... fall more often ,
.. .be less stable when walking ,
... become more susceptible to injuries and cramps ,
... get swollen calves ,
...and your feet could become weaker.

About the inventor
In his Hamburg practice, Dr. Christoph Bäumer has been treating children and adults with foot problems and associated posture disorders for decades. He concluded that the misuse of conventional insoles and the infrequent possibility of walking barefoot on natural surfaces are among the main causes of these conditions. So, he took it into his own hands to contribute to the solution to this problem with the SmartInsole®. His goal was to develop a mass-market insole that would keep children's feet healthy in the long term, as well as sustainably promote and maintain the (foot) health of adults.
He has been practicing medicine since 1989, has been training physicians since 2010, and began product development in 2017. His areas of expertise include orthopedics, pain therapy, and medical osteopathy.

FAQ
We have the answers to your questions
Who is the SmartInsole® suitable for?
The SmartInsole® is suitable for people of all ages, from shoe size 26 upwards, provided there are no open foot injuries or structural foot conditions such as heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, diabetic foot, or severe osteoarthritis. For children under 12 years of age, we recommend consultation with a doctor. The greatest preventive potential for these structural conditions and their precursors naturally arises from the use of the SmartInsole® in children of preschool age and older. Keeping children's feet healthy was one of the main motivations behind the founding of Smartfoot®.
Can I use the SmartInsole® if I have flat feet/splay feet?
Yes, users with functional disorders such as flat feet or splay feet report an improved feeling of stability and increased body awareness when wearing the SmartInsole®.
Do SmartInsoles® provide support for structural foot problems (e.g. heel spurs, plantar fasciitis)?
The SmartInsole® supports physiological processes such as muscle activation, posture control, and body awareness. It can help promote natural foot function, especially in cases of functional limitations—such as muscular weakness or postural imbalances. However, it is not intended to treat structural disorders such as joint changes, severe misalignments, or inflammatory processes. In such cases, you should first seek medical treatment. After successful therapy, the SmartInsole® can help stabilize your foot function and prevent recurrence of symptoms. Its use can be combined well with foot strengthening exercises, such as those based on the Spiraldynamik® concept by Dr. Christian Larsen. Please note: The effect may vary from person to person. If symptoms persist, we recommend seeking medical advice.
How often can I wear the SmartInsole®?
The longer and more frequently you wear the SmartInsole® daily, the stronger its sensorimotor effect can be. We therefore recommend wearing the SmartInsole® throughout the day, if possible, outside of bedtime. That is, whenever we stand or walk on the hard, flat, non-stimulating surfaces of our civilized environment, at work and at home, indoors and outdoors.
Can I use the SmartInsole® in any of my shoes?
In principle, any closed shoe with a removable footbed is suitable for use with the SmartInsole®. However, due to its thinner construction, the SportLine of the SmartInsole® can, in most cases, also be used in shoes without a removable footbed. Open shoes without heel support, such as sandals or women's shoes with higher heels, are not suitable for use with the SmartInsole®.
How long does a SmartInsole® last?
As with all insoles, the durability of SmartInsoles® is directly dependent on frequency of wear, body weight, daily step count, and any existing gait disturbances. Experience has shown that when used as recommended (alternating between two pairs), SmartInsoles® should be replaced with a new pair after approximately 12 months.
How long does it take for the SmartInsole® to be delivered?
Your order will be shipped within 3 business days at the latest. Shipping is via DHL, so your SmartInsole® will typically arrive within one week. Please note: In exceptional cases (e.g., holidays, high demand), slight delays may occur. You will receive a tracking number via email after shipment.
What can I do if I don't like the SmartInsoles® after purchasing them?
You can generally cancel your order within 14 days – you can find all the information in our cancellation policy.
Please note: Insoles are non-refundable if their original packaging has been opened or the seal has been damaged. This is because, for hygiene reasons, insoles cannot be reused after direct skin contact. If you are unsure whether the SmartInsole® is suitable for you, please contact us before opening it – we will give you honest and transparent advice.
How can I clean the SmartInsole®?
Please do not wash the SmartInsole® in the washing machine. To combat dirt and odors, it can be wiped with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Allow the SmartInsole® to air dry before reuse – do not dry it on radiators or in direct sunlight.
Are the SmartInsoles® machine washable?
No, please remove the SmartInsoles® from your shoes before washing them. If the soles need cleaning, please clean them by hand as described above.
Can I trim the SmartInsole® to make it fit better?
The SmartInsole® can be trimmed if necessary, although this is usually not necessary. The SmartInsole® SportLine is easier to trim than the SmartInsole® MedLine due to its thinner construction.
Are there different sizes or are the SmartInsoles® universal?
There are sizes 25-47, and to get the sole size you have to subtract one number from the shoe size. So if you have a shoe size of 39, for example, your sole size is 38.
How do I know what size I need for my SmartInsole®?
The correct SmartInsole® size is determined as follows: your shoe size minus 1. Most commercially available shoes today are made to US sizes, which are one size larger than shoes made to European sizes. Therefore, this conversion is necessary.
Can I also use the SmartInsole® while exercising?
For athletic use, we developed the SmartInsole® SportLine, which is more flexible and thinner than the MedLine. These adaptations make it ideal for use in sports shoes for virtually any sport, from soccer to weight training. The MedLine edition is also suitable for cycling, hiking, and walking. Intensive use of SmartInsoles®, e.g., during sporting activities, can, in rare cases, lead to irritation, redness, or blisters due to the increased strain on the skin on the feet. In this case, you should initially reduce your use of SmartInsoles®, as your skin on the feet needs to get used to the increased strain. If your symptoms persist or worsen, we recommend seeking medical advice.
What material is the SmartInsole® made of?
The SmartInsole® is constructed from four different specialized layers. Skin-friendly microfiber fabric, EVA foam, and Thermotech structural fabric are used for the various layers. This ensures skin compatibility, moisture management, elasticity, foot stimulation, and comfort.
Are the SmartInsoles® hypoallergenic?
To date, no allergic reactions have occurred when using SmartInsoles® since 2020.
Is there a warranty on the SmartInsole®?
Yes, but under certain conditions. Depending on use and stress, the SmartInsole® will last approximately 6-12 months, especially if you alternate between using at least two pairs of insoles, as we recommend. As with other everyday items (shirts, pants, etc.), wear and tear over time is unavoidable. In the case of the SmartInsole®, the top layer may begin to peel off at some of the stimulation points on the upper surface due to normal use; however, this does not affect its function. The stimulating function of the SmartInsole® is only impaired when the stimulation points become severely worn and lose their shape, which normally occurs after 12 months. However, if a defect in materials or workmanship occurs within 12 months of the date of purchase that is not due to improper use, normal wear and tear, or external influences, our guarantee applies. In this case, you are entitled to a replacement item.
To claim your warranty, please contact our customer service by email at info@smartfoot.de. Please include proof of purchase and a brief description of the defect. We reserve the right to verify your warranty based on the information provided.
How can I choose the right SmartInsole® variant for me?
In principle, the SmartInsole® Type MedLine is the insole of choice, as its functions cover most areas of life and have a slightly greater stimulating effect than the SportLine. However, the SmartInsole® Type SportLine is recommended for sporting activities due to its greater flexibility and thinner construction compared to the MedLine. The SportLine is also better suited for slim-fitting women's shoes, as its increased flexibility allows it to adapt better to the shape of the women's shoe and, thanks to its thinner construction, can be more easily trimmed if necessary. Finally, the SmartInsole® Type SportLine is also better suited for shoes without removable soles, as the SportLine is thin enough that in most cases it can simply be placed on top of the existing footbed in the shoe.
Can I use the SmartInsole® barefoot in my shoes?
We recommend wearing socks when using SmartInsoles®. However, you can also walk barefoot on the insoles; the stimulating sensation may be slightly more intense this way.
Is wearing the SmartInsole® uncomfortable for the first time?
Wearing the SmartInsole® for the first time can be uncomfortable at first, as feet are often no longer accustomed to this kind of stimulation. It may help to gradually increase the wearing time at first.
How do SmartInsoles® affect my posture?
Stabilizing the feet and knees often results in an alignment/correction of the pelvis and spine, including the head, neck and jaw joint. However, this only applies to functional posture disorders, not to structural ones (such as scoliosis or Bechterew's disease).
Can I also use the SmartInsole® in orthopedic shoes?
The use of the SmartInsole® in orthopedic shoes is only possible to a limited extent. In this case, you should consult your treating physician so that they can contact our medical team for coordination if necessary. If you are dependent on the use of a passively supported orthopedic insole due to a structural foot condition, generally only the SmartInsole® SportLine can be glued onto it due to its thin construction and high flexibility. Proper installation of the SmartInsole® onto the existing insole can be carried out by an orthopedic shoe technician. This means that despite your orthopedic insole, which you must wear for mechanical reasons due to a structural condition, you do not have to forego the functional advantages of Smartfoot®, such as the promotion of fluid transport from the foot to the heart and the improved sensorimotor function.
