Conventional orthopedic insoles damage the foot in 9 out of 10 cases
The foot is not just for walking, it is a sensory and muscular organ and a pump for lymph and blood, which is crucial for healthy walking and good posture. But foot health has deteriorated in recent decades . During his more than thirty years of work with orthopedic patients, Dr. Christoph Bäumer, the orthopedic surgeon, osteopath and pain therapist behind the Smartfoot products, had to make a shocking discovery: In his opinion, conventional orthopedic insoles with passive support elements damage the foot rather than help it in an estimated 9 out of 10 cases .
Dr. Christoph Bäumer also scientifically confirmed that children's feet deteriorate during development in 6 out of 10 cases and that passively supporting insoles have proven ineffective for children. In order to prevent foot problems and back pain, the foot muscles of both children and adults must be activated . This is why indigenous peoples who often walk barefoot on natural surfaces have fewer foot and posture problems . And this activating effect of walking barefoot can be simulated as best as possible using Smartfoot soles.

Who are the Smartfoot soles suitable for?
The Smartfoot insoles are suitable for people of all ages who have not yet developed a structural disease of the foot (structural diseases such as clubfoot, diabetic foot, severe arthrosis, etc.) and have been developed for 4 different needs:
1) For professionals who stand and walk a lot…
...our Smartfoot soles offer support and comfort to reduce fatigue in everyday work and to maintain foot health as best as possible.
2) For parents who want to bring the benefits of barefoot walking into their children’s shoes,…
... the Smartfoot soles support healthy development and help prevent misalignments, especially in combination with muscle-activating exercises (e.g. according to the concept of spiral dynamics according to Dr. Christian Larsen)
3) For older people with unsteady gait…
...the Smartfoot soles can help reduce the tendency to fall by improving the perception of the feet. In addition, leg swelling can be reduced by activating blood and lymph transport in the foot.
4) For athletes and all those who value their (foot) health…
...and want to maintain this in the long term, the Smartfoot soles promote a healthy and natural gait and support the wearer in achieving his or her best athletic performance.

How the Smartfoot soles work
The Smartfoot soles are unique because they do not passively support the foot, but actively stabilize it through muscles . They are flat and have specifically placed studs. By specifically stimulating these points , physical perception and the exchange of information between the feet and the brain are strengthened . This improved perception is converted into movement programs in the brain, which are then expressed in improved muscular function . This can ultimately contribute to improved posture and stability , as well as a reduced risk of falls and muscle cramps.
Furthermore, the skin on our feet has a special structure with multi-layered tension and grid lines. With every step on natural surfaces (e.g. beach, forest, meadow), this structure enables the mobilization of 30-40 cm3 of fluid , which improves lymph and blood flow . However, this only happens to a limited extent when standing or walking on the hard, flat surfaces of our modern environment . This is why many people in the professional environment have swollen legs and feet at the end of the day. With the Smartfoot sole, we can compensate for today's lack of naturalness when walking and bring the aforementioned advantages of walking on natural surfaces into almost any shoe!
If you don't take care of your feet
What happens if you continue to walk on hard, flat surfaces without considering your feet?
If you neglect your feet, you could potentially...
...cannot find a solution for recurring pain in the knee, foot or back ,
... fall more often ,
.. .be less stable when walking,
... become more susceptible to injuries and cramps,
...get thicker calves,
...and your feet may become weaker.
About the inventor
With over 30 years of experience as a doctor, I have committed myself to the principles of Hippocrates. This also includes the principle of "Nihil nocere" - "Do no harm". Unfortunately , in 9 out of 10 cases, conventional orthopedic insoles are more harmful to the patient's health than helpful. This fact, along with the fact that walking barefoot on natural surfaces is rarely possible these days, is probably one of the main reasons why I have seen so many sick children's and adults' feet in my daily work.
I have made it my mission to do my part to keep children's feet healthy during their development and to promote and maintain people's foot and posture health in adulthood. That's why I have developed a sole that simulates barefoot walking in the shoe as best as possible and is intended to help improve and maintain people's (foot) health in the long term . I have been practicing as a doctor since 1989 , training doctors since 2010 and started product development in 2017. Today, I use my knowledge to show the way to better health as a medical coach and teacher.

We have the answers to your questions
Who is the sole suitable for?
The Smartfoot sole is suitable for anyone of any age who does not have a structural foot disease that requires medical treatment. The greatest potential for preventing these structural diseases and their precursors naturally arises from the use of the Smartfoot sole in children from preschool age (from shoe size 26). Keeping children's feet healthy was one of the main motivations behind the founding of Smartfoot.
Can I use the sole if I have flat feet/fallen arches?
Yes, the Smartfoot sole was developed precisely for this common dysfunction of the feet, among other things. This is so that the dysfunction of the foot does not lead to painful symptoms of the knee, back, neck, etc.
Do the Smartfoot soles provide support for certain foot problems (e.g. heel spurs, plantar fasciitis)?
Smartfoot soles do not treat structural diseases, but rather the precursors of the disease such as muscular weakness, poor posture and dysfunction, or they are prevented from occurring altogether. In the case of structural diseases that have already occurred, classic orthopedic treatment is recommended first. After successful treatment, Smartfoot soles can help prevent the symptoms from recurring. You can also learn specific exercises to strengthen your feet from medical and physiotherapeutic Smartfoot partners (e.g. the concept of spiral dynamics according to Dr. Christian Larsen).
How often can I wear the sole?
We recommend wearing the insoles throughout the day, if possible, outside of bedtime. That is, whenever we stand or walk on hard, flat, non-stimulating surfaces in a civilized environment, at work and at home, indoors and outdoors.
Can I use the sole in any of my shoes?
Basically, any closed shoe with a removable footbed is suitable for using Smartfoot soles. However, due to its thinner construction, the SportLine Edition from Smartfoot can also be used in shoes without a removable footbed in most cases. Open shoes without heel support, such as sandals or women's shoes with higher heels, are not suitable for using Smartfoot soles.
How long does a sole last?
As with all soles, durability is directly dependent on use, weight, number of steps per day and any gait disturbances that may be present. As a rule, when used as recommended (alternating use of 2 pairs), the Smartfoot sole can be used for 6-12 months.
How long does it take for the sole to arrive at home?
The online shop ships the purchased goods within 3 working days at the latest; with normal postal service (DHL shipping), the goods should usually reach the customer within a week.
What can I do if I don't like them after buying them?
In the unused condition, the goods can be returned in the unlikely event that you do not like them (we cannot imagine that happening ;-).
How can I clean the Smartfoot soles?
You can wipe the soles with a soft cloth and warm soapy water to counteract dirt/odors. It is recommended that you let the soles dry outside of the shoe.
Are the Smartfoot soles machine washable?
No, please remove the soles from the shoes before washing them. If the soles need to be cleaned, please clean them by hand as described above.
Can I trim the Smartfoot sole to make it fit better?
Possible, but usually not necessary. With the SportLine Edition, cutting is easier if necessary than with the MedLine Edition due to its thinner construction.
Are there different sizes or are the Smartfoot soles universal?
There are sizes 25-47, and to get the sole size you have to subtract one number from the shoe size. So if you have a shoe size of 39, for example, your sole size is 38.
How do I know what size I need for my Smartfoot sole?
The correct size of the soles is determined as follows: shoe size minus 1. Most commercially available shoes today are made to US sizes, which are one size larger than shoes made to Euro sizes, so this conversion is necessary.
Can I also use the Smartfoot soles when doing sports?
For sporting use, we have developed the SportLine Edition, which is more flexible and thinner than the MedLine Edition. These adjustments make it ideal for use in sports shoes for any sport, from football to weight training. We particularly recommend the SportLine Edition from Smartfoot for jumping and dynamic sports with lots of changes in direction. However, the MedLine Edition is also suitable for cycling, hiking and walking.
What material is the Smartfoot sole made of?
The Smartfoot sole is made up of 4 different specialized layers. Skin-friendly microfiber fabric, EVA foam and Thermotech structural fabric are used for the different layers. This ensures that the Smartfoot soles are skin-friendly, moisture-managed, elastic, stimulate the foot and comfortable to wear.
Are the Smartfoot soles hypoallergenic?
So far, no allergic reactions have occurred when using the sole since 2020.
Is there a guarantee on the Smartfoot soles?
Depending on the use and stress on the soles, the shelf life is 12 months if you use at least 2 pairs of soles alternately as we recommend. As with other everyday items (shirt, trousers, etc.), wear and tear over time is unavoidable. In the case of Smartfoot soles, the top layer on some of the sole's studs may begin to peel off through normal use, but this does not affect their function. The stimulating function of the Smartfoot sole is only impaired when the studs have become very worn and lose their shape, which is usually the case after 12 months. However, if an unusual problem occurs within the first 12 months of purchase that cannot be explained by improper use, this is covered by our guarantee conditions. In this case, which in our experience is unlikely, you are welcome to return your faulty Smartfoot sole to us and we will send you a replacement.
How can I choose the right Smartfoot Edition for me?
In principle, the MedLine Edition from Smartfoot is the sole of choice because it covers most areas of life in terms of its function and has a slightly higher stimulating effect than the SportLine Edition. However, the SportLine Edition is recommended for sporting activities due to its greater flexibility and thinner construction in contrast to the MedLine. The SportLine Edition is also better suited for slim-cut women's shoes because its increased flexibility means it can adapt better to the shape of the women's shoe and its thinner construction means it can be cut more easily if necessary. Finally, the SportLine Edition is also better suited for shoes without a removable sole because the Sportline Edition is thin enough that in most cases it can simply be placed on top of the sole already in the shoe.
Can I wear the Smartfoot soles barefoot?
Socks are recommended when wearing them. However, you can also walk barefoot on the soles; the stimulating feeling can be a little more intense this way.
How long does it take to get used to the Smartfoot insoles when I use them for the first time?
There is an adjustment period lasting from a few minutes to a few days, sometimes with symptoms similar to muscle soreness, which then usually disappear quickly while wearing the shoes. Due to pronounced pre-existing weakness of the foot and lower leg muscles, some users report an adjustment period with mild muscle cramps, which can be quickly improved with magnesium and stretching exercises.
How do the Smartfoot soles affect my posture?
Stabilizing the feet and knees often results in an alignment/correction of the pelvis and spine, including the head, neck and jaw joint. However, this only applies to functional posture disorders, not to structural ones (such as scoliosis or Bechterew's disease).
Can I also use the Smartfoot soles in orthopedic shoes?
The use of Smartfoot soles in orthopedic shoes is only possible to a limited extent. In such a case, you should consult your doctor so that he or she can contact our medical team for coordination if necessary. If you are dependent on the use of a passively supporting orthopedic insole due to a structural foot disease, only the SportLine Edition of Smartfoot can usually be glued onto it due to its thin structure and high flexibility. The Smartfoot sole can be properly mounted onto the existing insole by a shoe orthopedic technician. This means that despite your orthopedic insole, which you have to wear for mechanical reasons due to a structural disease, you do not have to forego the functional advantages of Smartfoot, such as the promotion of fluid transport from the foot to the heart and the improved sensorimotor functions.
